Obituary

On Monday, September 28, at 7:00 p.m., Pat passed away peacefully surrounded by a room filled with sadness, kindness, love, and, most importantly, family.

Patricia Joyce (Hood) Johnson was born on September 10, 1936, in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Tarsney Lake, south of Grain Valley before graduating from Lee’s Summit High School in 1954.

On April 28, 1953, Pat married Everett Weldon Johnson. Together, they moved to a farm near Bates City, where they raised their three children. They later moved to Oak Grove, where Pat worked at Commercial Bank for 23½ years. In 2007, she moved to Savannah, Missouri, where she lived for the next 19 years. In 2015, Pat moved to LaVerna Senior Living, where she formed meaningful relationships with those who cared for her and made some special friendships along the way.

The two most important things in Pat’s life were her faith and her family. She was a devoted member of the Baptist church, where she sang in the choir, often singing in a trio with her good friends Margaret Riffle and Helen Evans, and was involved in countless church activities. Her faith was an important part of who she was and how she lived her life.

Pat always considered being a good mother one of her greatest accomplishments and joys in life. She wanted to be present for the people she loved and rarely missed an opportunity to support her children and grandchildren. She attended sporting events, school plays, and countless activities, cheering them on as loudly as possible. She was always proud of their endeavors and successes. One year, she even used a tax return to buy a pitching machine—a perfect example of the lengths she would go to support her family.

Pat had many interests and hobbies throughout her life, including embroidery, bird watching, and genealogy. Her love of genealogy became much more than a hobby. It led her to spend countless hours researching family history, organizing family reunions, traveling to places connected to her family, speaking to classes, and writing articles to preserve the stories and history of those who came before her. Her curiosity and determination even led her to leave letters at the gravesites of people whose families she was researching, hoping to connect with descendants who might be able to share more about their family history. Pat took great pride in knowing where her family came from and making sure those stories were not forgotten.

Pat was also known for her loving and giving heart. Her door was always open to family and friends, whether they were stopping by for a visit or needed a place to stay during a difficult time. She welcomed people into her home and made them feel comfortable, cared for, and loved. She gave freely of her time, her talents, and her heart, often without ever expecting anything in return.

Pat leaves behind a family who loved her dearly. She is survived by her daughter, Ardena Joyce Soetaert, and her sons, Jay (Beverly) Johnson and Jim (Cindy) Johnson. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Susan (Cody) Brittain, Marla (Samuel) Ungeheier, Victoria (Kane) Mueller, Connie (Kenny) James, Sarah (Marco) Jimenez, Justin Johnson, and Jordan Booker. Her family continues through 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and multiple nieces and nephews who brought her tremendous joy and gave her many generations of memories to treasure. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joan Hood.

Pat has been reunited at Heaven’s gates with those who preceded her in death: her parents, Elmer Crum Hood and Silva Lorena (Johnson) Hood; her brothers, Jack (Tong Hui “Tony”) Hood and Bob Hood; her son-in-law, Edward Soetaert; and Everett and Doris Johnson.

Pat’s family was the center of her world. She spent her life cheering them on, opening her home to them, preserving the family stories, and making sure the people she loved knew they mattered. Her legacy is one of faith, generosity, devotion, and unconditional love—a legacy that will continue through the many generations of family she leaves behind.

The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, October 2, 2026 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, where the family will be sharing Words of Remembrance at the beginning of the visitation at 5:00 PM, and will be repeated at the conclusion of the visitation at 6:45 PM.
